Theme and Summary: The Little Mermaid By Hans Christian Andersen

Now when we were all younger we had a favorite fairy tale, well mine was The Little Mermaid. I only saw and read the disney version of it no trash talking I loved it, but we all know that Disney make it all happy endings because they don't want to scare little kids of sad endings. So out of curiosity I looked up the original story and now I understand why Disney changed the ending.

The story starts with Arial and her wanting to see the world above the seas. Her grandmother she sees it soon since she be turning 15 soon. In the mermaid culture you can see above the seas at that age so, when she went up by chance there was a ship with a handsome prince. She fell for him at love at first sight and then a storm came and the ship broke. Arial saves the prince and she's wait till she saw a temple girl came and care for the prince. The prince never sees her. Then after her meeting she went to her grandmother and asked if humans can live as long as like mermaids. Her grandmother replied that humans have shorter life span than mermaid 300 years. She also said that after they die they go to heaven. Unlike the mermaids turn to sea form and crease to exist. Longing with life with the prince and eternal soul she went to Sea Witch and said she can give her legs to see the prince for the price of her voice, now she can't go back to the sea. She will only obtain a soul if she finds true love's kiss and if the prince loves her and marries her, for that a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn she will die and turn into sea foam.Arial drinks the potion and meets the prince, who is mesmerised by her beauty and grace even though she is mute. When the prince's father orders his son to marry the neighboring king's daughter, the prince tells Arial he will not because he does not love the princess. He goes on to say he can only love the young woman from the temple, who he believes rescued him. It turns out that the princess is the temple girl, who had been sent to the temple to be educated. The prince loves her, and the wedding is announced. The prince and princess marry, and Arial's heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has given up and of all the pain she has suffered. She despairs, thinking of the death that awaits her, but before dawn, her sisters bring her a knife that the Sea Witch has given them. If Arial slays the prince with the knife and lets his blood drip on her feet, she will become a mermaid again, all her suffering will end, and she will live out her life.
However the Arial couldn't bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his bride, and she throws herself into the sea as dawn breaks. Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the sun; she has turned into a spirit. She earn her own soul by doing good deeds and she will eventually rise up into the kingdom of God.

This version was really sad but something that we all can relate to, "Love can make one blind and lost but can bring one so much more." I say this is the theme because we all been in one sided love, I personal have been. The guys I like don't like me but someone else and I'm left with the pain and wondering like her why love if all i get is pain. She was blind by handsome guy who told her he loved her but changed his mind and left her. This is like now a days with teenage relationships, we girls fall for the first guy who says I love you. Then they leave and we go through this cycle till we find mister right. I felt that Arial found her mister right it was God who gave her eternal soul and now she finally found her place.

This song is by my favorite group EXO "Baby Don't Cry" This song is based on the original story personal I cry every time I hear the song and the sad lyrics.
