Post 5: • Adapting your book

The book Divergent was a good book with an interesting and action filled plot and a strong main female role, which we don’t see often enough. This made it refreshing read and gave me a new perspective on reading.  Some parts of the book were slow and didn’t get to the main and important part till very much later on in the book. Some parts I would cut are Tris in school. I found that though it was nice we get to know who she was in before choosing day. Took more room and could be shorten or cut out, it was only exciting when she got near the choosing day. Another part of the book I would cut out is the Edward; the reason is because he is a minor character and in the end leaves Dauntless.

Some things I would keep in the book is the Choosing Day, it was a vital point in the book because from that point on where we see Tris grow as a character. Some things that do have to change are when they cut their hand and let the blood drop to the faction they chose to live. We could make it less blooded for people who are sensitive to these types of things. We change it to a cut to one finger and not across the whole hand like it was written in the book. Another thing I wouldn’t cut from the book is the entire fight scene. The reason is bring action in the movie and always this is where we see big changings in Tris character and in her training to be a Dauntless. We can use stunt doubles for the fight scene or we train the actors to fight themselves. Lastly I would keep Four scene and where he explain his tattoos. This show the main point of the book of you shouldn’t let society judge you for one thing. This help ties in the movie with the book and give a take away to learn from it.
